Public debate on the motion ” This government should renounce the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova “

The Information and Documentation Centre on NATO in Moldova held on May 16th a public debate in the British Parliamentary format with the motion “This Government should abandon the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova”. The government team was represented by Victor Cotruţă and Andrei Lutenco, and opposition team by Andrei Panici and Lina Acălugăriţei.

.

The arguments of the Government team focused on the idea that the neutrality is already an outdated concept, and Moldova is unable to meet the current threats independently. The opposition team advocated in favor of maintaining the status quo, trying to show that the country is not ready to become a member of a military alliance, something that would bring more disadvantages than benefits.

Public interventions focused the breach of Article 11 of the Constitution by the presence of troops on the territory of a foreign country . Debate conclusions revealed that there is an information vacuum regarding the status of neutrality , security options and ameninţrile to security RM . The role of information back cover this gap both politicians as well as civil society and every citizen of the country.
