Public lecture held by Iulian Chifu at FIUM

On October the 17th, the IDC on NATO has organized the public lecture held by Iulian Chifu on the topic “Romania and the Republic of Moldova in the current security context: perspectives after NATO Summit in Wales”. The event took place at the Free International University of Moldova and it was attended by H.E. Mr. Mehmet Selim Kartal, Turkey’s Ambassador to Moldova as well as H.E. Mr. Marius Lazurca, Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Moldova, and by students interested in the topic of relations between Moldova, NATO and Romania.

During the presentation, and during the session of questions and answers Mr. Chifu has discussed with the attendants a number of topics relevant to the subject of regional security. One of these was NATO’s Summit in Wales where the main topic of discussion was the situation in Crimea.

Mr. Chifu stressed that today, when after a long time when Europe’s borders are again modified by force, the transatlantic cohesion has emerged. The West is unified when it comes to values and principles, and when international law is being challenged.

It was also underscored that following the summit of Wales, Moldova has the opportunity to participate in two initiatives: the first one for the reconstruction and improvement of the military component of the armed forces and 2) ensuring the interoperability capacity of the armed forces of the Republic of Moldova  with those of the Alliance.

Another point of view stated by Mr. Chifu is that Moldova is facing a choice between the European and the Eurasian integration, vector and that this choice must be made and assumed.

The public lecture was organized within the Security for You(th) project currently implemented by the Information and Documentation Centre on NATO in Moldova. For more details you can please contact us at +373 22/577 824, or by email at info@infocenter.md.
