Workshop: Disinformation and the need for strengthening the Strategic Communication

In the period from October to December 2016 Information and Documentation Centre on NATO from Moldova implemented the project entitled “Capaciy building trainings for journalists and opinion formers in relfecting security and defense issues” This project aims to develop the capacity of local media, press officers and officials, opinion leaders, and includes a number of activities, including a two-day training course aimed on the objective reflection and promotion of security and defense.

In the framework of the project, on November 23 had place a workshop entitled “Disinformation and the need for strengthening the Strategic Communication.” This event was supported by Susanne Kiefer, a representative of the operational group StratCom-East and the European External Action Service.

The event began with the introductory words of the executive director of IDC on NATO Elena Marzac, who pointed out the necessity to counter Russian propaganda in the Republic of Moldova and the importance of the EU StratCom mission in the analysis and monitoring of the media in distribution of information for the public access.

Susanne Kiefer presented The Disinformation Review, platform that collects examples of pro-Kremlin disinformation and distributes them on a weekly basis. During the event was mentioned and the specificity of the mass media in the Republic of Moldova, which contains a set of Russian channels and leads to the emergence of manipulation of the people. The aim of EU STRATCOM is to conduct research in the field of communication for the extraction of most experience, the development of communication strategies and online courses titled “communication strategy for beginners”, course for senior officials, the basis course and an advanced course. In the end of the event, participants had the possibility to ask questions about the process of countering the propaganda in the Republic of Moldova and about the strategic elements of disinformation.
